Ban on legal aid for terrorists ‘could backfire’

A new law to quit terrorists declaring legal aid challenges “unintended consequences” and could boost the threat of them carrying out a new attack, the government’s terror watchdog has warned Parliament.

Jonathan Hall QC said that clauses in the new Nationwide Stability Bill bringing in a 30-yr ban on terror convicts claiming civil legal support were being intended by ministers to be “symbolic”.

He stated the government’s goal was “to reflect the significance of the bonds with the state and society that are broken by the fee of terrorist offences”.

But he warned that the reform could backfire by stopping them from having enable for mental overall health, housing or other challenges, and by undermining the prospects of them reintegrating productively again into culture immediately after release from prison.

“Even symbolic limits could have functional consequences,” Mr Corridor warns parliamentarians in a briefing observe on the new laws.

“No launched terrorist offender is going to reoffend simply simply because their entry to civil authorized support is limited. But authorized suggestions and support is related to securing enable on housing, debt and mental wellness.

“A homeless terrorist offender, or a single whose mental wellness wants are unaddressed, will current a better danger to the public. There is a danger of unintended consequences.”

Mr Hall, the impartial reviewer of terrorism laws, adds that whilst introduced terrorist offenders “do current a particular risk” the “best outcome” for the general public is for them to reintegrate into society correctly.

“A terrorist offender who goes back into modern society and life quietly is a rosier prospect than just one who needs perpetual checking,” his briefing take note states.
