Me Izaguirre clarified that during the brief hearing, they did not ask for bail for Palacios, who is being held in a federal prison in Miami, adding that Federal Magistrate Lauren Fleischer Louis, in charge of the case, had not communicated a date for the next hearing.

Note that beyond the statements of Palacio’s lawyer, the South Florida prosecutor’s office had stressed that Palacios is accused of a “serious” crime and had asked to continue to keep the Colombian in detention, considering that there was “a escape risk” and a “danger to the community”.

According to the prosecutor’s office, Palacios was part of a group of about 20 Colombian citizens and other Haitian-Americans who “participated in a plot to kidnap or kill the Haitian President.”

According to court documents, Palacios was hired to provide security and participate in an operation in which they would initially arrest President Jovenel Moïse.

Palacios explained that the original plan was to capture the President at the airport and take him on a plane, but acknowledged that at the last minute, on July 6, 2021, he was informed that plans had changed and that it was now a question of assassinating the President of Haiti.

The indictment alleges that on July 7, Palacios and others entered the President’s residence in Haiti with the intent and purpose of assassinating him.

The former soldier faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
