What would it have been like to dwell in Babel in the times immediately after its destruction? In the Guide of Genesis, we are instructed that the descendants of Noah designed a good city in the land of Shinar. They created a tower “with its best in the heavens” to “make a name” for them selves. God was offended by the hubris of humanity and stated:
Glimpse, they are 1 people, and they have all one language and this is only the starting of what they will do almost nothing that they suggest to do will now be not possible for them. Occur, let us go down, and confuse their language there, so that they will not fully grasp just one another’s speech.
The text does not say that God wrecked the tower, but in a lot of well-known renderings of the story he does, so let’s maintain that dramatic picture in our minds: persons wandering amid the ruins, not able to talk, condemned to mutual incomprehension.
